Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Celestron Power TankCustomer Review: All you need for many hours per charge of telescope astronomy. Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this in advance of ordering my Celestron NexStar 6 SE Telescope because I wanted to be able to use the telescope right out of the box. The alternative was to get a set of eight AA batteries to power the telescope, but that would have only given me a little over an hour of use per set, and I would need to realign the telescope after each set died.
OK, so what about rechargeable AA batteries? Let's say I only wanted to go out for a modest two hour stargazing session with my telescope--really I would want enough power for four or five hours of viewing time, but let's say two here. That means I would need 16 fully charged, rechargeable batteries. I actually use these batteries in just about everything at home and for outdoor sports, but 16 of them would cost me over $40 if I buy them here on Amazon, or over $60 if I buy them at CVS.
I paid $49.86 + tax ($54.29 total) for my PowerTank. It comes with the cord required to connect it to my telescope. And I've used it for a total of over six hours so far--including powering the telescope and using the lights--without needing to recharge.
Don't waste your money on what you perceive as cheap batteries when what you really need is a PowerTank. The PowerTank will actually save you both money and frustration.
Add that it's a fantastic item to have even during a minor emergency both as a power source and a powerful light (and 'powerful' is really an understatement here).
Customer Review: No Complaints Summary: 5 Stars
I bought the 7Ahr PowerTank specifically to power a brand new GoTo telescope and the stuff that supports it (lights, heaters, GPS, etc.), and I use it ONLY for that purpose! It's been wet, frozen, sun-baked, dropped, kicked and stored. Although I lost the charger about 2 years ago, I've never changed a light bulb or fuse in the tank itself! It has the brightest hand held spot light I've ever seen! The PowerTank has never failed me. Last week, after six years and four months, the battery died (the nerve) but I have absolutely no complaints.
Pro's: It was designed for a specific purpose and lasted 6 years doing it!
The price was right for my budget.
The 2 12VDC slide covers are perfect for continued outdoors use.
2 year warrantee (who else does that?)
Contrary to the manual, you can change the battery easily (but you must remove 8 screws to get to it)
Con's: None, but note, it has internal circuit boards. Mine worked fine but one never knows about circuits.
I just ordered and received the 17 Ahr PowerTank. With any luck, it will be just as good. I recommend it!
Customer Review: Amazing! Summary: 5 Stars
This thing is great, built like a tank with many clever features. If nothing else, it is the best flashlight I have ever owned. The spotlight can be tilted over a 180 degree range and uses a 55W halogen bulb. The smaller flashlight/emergency light uses a smaller 6W krypton bulb and includes a red filter which is strapper to the handle to keep it from getting lost. The battery can be recharged with the included AC adaptor or the cigar lighter in your car. There is a handy storage compartment in the rear of the unit to store the DC recharging cord. An elaborate display of LEDs provides status of the battery and charging process. A shoulder strap is also included, as it weighs 8.4 lbs. There are plenty of outputs and power to easily drive two telescopes and your radio or CD player.
Customer Review: Must have for Celestron Go-To scopes Summary: 5 Stars
This item has proved invaluable with my new Celestron Nexstar 4SE. One set of batteries only lasted an hour or so, so it has already paid for itself with several multi-hour evenings of viewing. It recharges fairly quickly and is a handy tool in setting up and tearing down too. Improvements? If the red "flashlight" was removeable, that would be a nice bonus. Also, the compartment that holds the power cord for the scope would be better if it were slightly larger than "big enough" for the folded cord. But don't let that stop you from purchasing it. What it does, it does well.
Customer Review: Fantastic Power Tank Summary: 5 Stars
The Celestron Power Tank is very useful. I bought it to power my Celestron Nexstar 8 SE telescope, since 8 "AA" batteries do not last very long in it. With the Power Tank I can use my scope all night. It also came in handy when Hurricane Humberto knocked our power out. I used the Power Tank to power my portable TV so I could watch the storm coverage on the local news. I used the built-in flash lights during the storm, too. The Celestron Power Tank is a great product!
