Customer Review: Nice entry-level microscope for young kids

I was looking for a simple and cheap microscope for my 6 year old daughter who expressed an interest. From the reviews I couldn't quite tell whether this was going to fit the bill. Overall I'm very happy with the product as is my daughter. The microscope is quite small and compact which is nice. It is powered through the USB so there is no need for batteries or a plug. This does keep you tethered to the computer but for my purposes that was fine. On a Mac you can direct the video into PhotoBooth to view but the included software wont work on that platform thus no pictures or videos. On a Windows PC the software installs and allows you to take snapshots and videos. I've used the microscope on both platforms and both are plug & play.
The included stand is also compact and well designed. It's sturdy and made of metal. A simple "nut" loosens to allow you to vary the positioning of the microscope with respect to the stand. In most cases no stand is necessary. The lens is protected by a tube of clear plastic at the bottom of the microscope. The lens is recessed by about a inch or more so it would be hard to damage it or get fingerprints on the surface; a potential issue with young kids. Without the stand you can simply place the microscope directly on top of anything you are viewing to maintain a fixed distance between the subject and microscope and then fine tune the focus. The focusing is all accomplished with a single dial that takes your from a small magnification to a better magnification. LEDs located inside the protective tube provide ample illumination. We looked at a few things like salt, my wedding ring, dollar bills, quarters, hair, fabrics, fingertips, and cuticles and enjoyed seeing things that just weren't possible with our eyes. If she continues to show interest I may step up the game next year.
